I was just remembering something my BP did in his early days with me.

I was in his cage spot cleaning, changing water, etc. And after a few seconds I realized he hadn't come out to see what was going on in his home. He would usually poke his little head out and check out the noise. I kept on cleaning and he still hadn't shown himself. I started to get worried (typical new snake parent) and lifted his hide off him. Still no movement. I even brushed my hand against him and still nothing. I remember getting so scared and not knowing what to do. I stood back watching him while every horrible thought went through my mind, when suddenly he fliched - it was like he jerked himself awake or something.
I always wondered what that was all about and what happened.

Anyone seen this before or have any ideas?

That's what I thought. I wish I could sleep that well! Must have been having some good dreams to not care who was in his territory. LOL.

Speeking of which, how do snakes sleep?? I know they don't have eyelids like us to open and close. Is it more of a relaxing rest?

I would imagine that they lose consciousness (sleep) as much as any wild animal does. Closed eye-lids do not equate to sleep. If a human were to lose their eyelids for some awful reason, they would still have to sleep. An alien being who closed off their ears as well as their eyes might wonder how human beings could possibly sleep when they can still hear everything going on around them. .....Ya think?
