infrared theromoter recommendation

Could you please recommend a good infrared thermometer that the laser can be turned off.

The reality is that the DS ratio is likely the most important spec on the gun. I would suggest 1:1 (4 inch optimal range) or 6:1 (24 inch optimal range) as the best measuring range is reasonable for Royals and most animals kept that are non venomous. Check the accuracy most are +/-1ºC (apx 2ºF) I would avoid any that are greater than this. The only other thing to keep in mind is batteries? How common and how much are they? I had an old meter that took CR123a off the shelf in my area they are completely overpriced at 18$ each (took 2) I could order them online for much less but it always died when I needed it. I now look for meters that take common batteries (aaa,aa,9v).

Oh sorry I forgot. there are a number with out lasers all together and if you buy on line look at australia they have legislated all laser devises must be able to turn off. So all the ones intended for the Australian market have a switch for the laser.

This is the one we use and it is a great product!
10:1 DS ratio and it is the most accurate(+/- 1% not 1 deg C) temp gun we have found at a decent price.
Fluke 62 IR temp gun

Fluke makes great instruments for sure. Let's not get carried away with accuracy 1% of 90 is 0.9F so close to one degree it makes no difference. The issue with10:1 is the best target range is 40 inches or so? It seems far for a snake as docile as a Royal python. It is a great piece of kit but for the task at hand a bit overkill especially when a good TStat is so close in price and a very accurate analogue thermometer is about the same.

The 62 is gone now but the new one lists +/- 1 or 1.5 degrees C the 63 is listed at +\- 2 degrees C I suspect it is 2 degrees or 1% which ever is greater. IR guns are great tools but high degree of accuracy is not among the talent typically. I don't have specs on the 63. There is no doubt buying quality is usually cost effective in the long run and that is a killer meter at a very good price I personally feel that if should be following a great t-stat and a good thermometer.

I'm not getting carried away about it's accuracy, but it is actually twice as accurate as the ones listed on Reptile Basics. The Fluke is rated at 1% so as you stated at 90F it is +/-.9degF. And the ones listed on Reptile Basic are rated at 1deg Celcius or 1.8deg F.
The 412LR is a 12:1 DS and the Fluke is 10:1 so not much difference there.
With shipping from RB the 412LR is about $63 to my location so $60-65 shipped.
The Fluke 62 is $72 shipped thru Amazon.
And the biggest difference is the Fluke 62 comes with a 2 year warranty and the 412LR only comes with a 1 year warranty.
So for approx. $10 more you get a IR gun that is twice as accurate and has a warranty that is twice as long.

The Fluke 62 may not still be available directly thru Fluke, but it is still available thru other sources.

And I completely agree that a very good T-Stat is definitely still a must and more important!

I hate to point out but the specs on the mini 62 are quite clear +/-1ºC (2ºF) (10-30ºC) or 1% whichever is greater, beyond this is +/- 1.5ºC (3ºF) or 1.5% whichever is greater. It has the same accuracy as most others. looking on my phone I only found 1% and that is quite good but it is also almost unheard of. Almost always it stats a º amount as well and whichever is greater. It certainly does not make a bad tool far from that Fluke make some of the best instruments going I have used a 'stik' thermometer of theirs awesome... wicked expensive, too expensive actually another story.
