Tame soft furs!

I've been breeding ASF rats for a while, and my 3rd generation was just born a couple days ago. As the first litter was born from each group, I chose the tamest 3 to start a new group. I've been having problems with the females, but the males have always been tame, and this group's females are finally close to being good pets. They are now to the point that they will let me pet them when they have babies, even though they have had very little handling. I hope to be able to sell these guys as pets soon, as they are smaller than rats, make better parents than mice or rats, and smell less than mice.

I feel like it must be so frustrating to slectively breed ASF's when you first start. I didnt start culling the unwanted genetics in my norways till I was already breeding at a pretty decent rate, and ASFs take even longer to start up XDD. But way to go man. Thats an awesome mile marker for your colony = P

Thats really cool, I cant wait to get my breeding program really underway, right now im hurting so much for feeders that im keepng a really aggressive femal i have.

I think it really helped that my original male is so tame that I consider him a pet. I was glad when I finally had a big enough snake to eat my most aggressive one; no more charging to bite my hand!

I feel like soft furred rats make much better breeders than regular rats, and out of all of my soft fur litters, I've only had one eaten by the mom, while I've lost 2/3 of my rat litters because the moms wouldn't care for them. You also never have to seperate the breeding groups, they can have babies back-to-back with no problems, and they do better in bigger groups than the other rats. The babies do grow more slowly, but that's not really an issue because all but one of my snakes are baby-year old, and the aggression is no longer a problem for me.

We have 48 colonies of 1.5 and all but 2 are even hand tame. Now the other 2 colonies draw blood every time I open their tub, but they are going to be replaced in the next week or two as some of my grow up colonies are almost up to size. We did the same as Kittycatpenut with taking the calm one, but after the first litters some females turn out to be crazy

But it's weird because if they don't have babies I can hold them live a pet rat

That's awesome that you're having success breeding in tameness!

I kinna stared breeding asf's by accident, had a few I got for picky snakes that didn't get eaten and tossed em in a tub together. Mine all started out pretty wild but tamed down as they matured.

I picked up my first colony at an expo.

They don't enjoy being held much but they don't bite, and don't mind me petting them inside their cage.

Even with babies, they're still fine. I feed them wax worms with tongs and they love them.

My boy nibbles on my fingers sometimes but has never actually bit down or anything.
