I was just wondering what everyone's substrate of choice is. I have been using aspen. I like the way it smells, and the fact that it offers the snakes a nice cushiony place to sleep. I hate the mess it creates in my snakeroom after taking a snake out (they coil around it, then they relax in your arms and aspen is everywhere!) What's Your substrate of choice??

Mine's for bark...I use a special kind which looks good and is not harmful to the snake. It also suppost to hold the humidity better too. Great lookin' bp!

I'm currently using newspaper in all snake enclosures, but to be totally honest I prefer reptile carpet or astroturf because it's better for helping them shed and you can cut pieces to fit your cage exactly more easily than with newspaper.

Reptibark works real well dissipating pad heat, holding humidity, pieces big enough they don't ingest with meals, they like rubbing their bellies and chins on it (undulate my snakeys)

I add sphagnum on top for the blood (damn she loves to burrow).

Kings and milk are on aspen - as is the liasis atm.

I've got paper towels for my beardie right now....and that's worked out so far, except that the crickets hide under it. For Caesar, we're using eco-earth...that shredded cocunut stuff. He burrowed in it when he was in a burrowing mood, and it's not too messy.

    Snakes get astro-turf.

For the lizards it's nothing but eco-earth or whatever. Real nice, stuff. Made from coconut barks and stuff.

It's the BEST substrate on the market, and it's among the cheapest. On 3.50 block fills a 30 gallon.
