A lot of people use the Acu-Rite digital thermometer/hygromoter combo these are cheap and more accurate than the petstore dial type...

I've used a bunch of these but have decided to phase them out of my cages since they end up needing to be replaced about once per year. They cost $12 at walmart

What I am moving to are industrial dial type thermometers and hygrometers that can be calibrated. They cost more up front and will require bimonthly calibration but shouldn't ever need to be replaced.

I hate accurite myself inaccurite in my experience. I have never found them to be very accurate at all or for long. I also use dial types not the crumby pet store ones but good instruments. The spring system is more reliable than electric resistance like the accurite and they can easily be calibrated. The cheap digital units are typically rated to 5% rh +/- this is fine but accurite is 20% that is if it is operating correctly and if you get one that is out beyond this (I had two out of the box out of calibration) it is so far off that sticking your face in an guessing is likely better. Expensive good digital units are a expensive and be fragile they simply will not stand up (they come in hard cases for a reason).

my fav is western instruments they make a great unit. It is certified and accurate out of the box. A simple salt test can confirm the accuracy quickly.
