    Tegu care sheet?
So today marks the start of my research to own and take care of a Tegu. I am not going to be getting one until at least next spring. I would love for someone to point me in the right direction for a good care sheet and just some general knowledge on them. I have the space and will have its permanent enclosure constructed before I get one. Also I understand that they need space and they eat like pigs. I am interested in a blue anyone know any reputable breeders? Thanks for your answers in advance.

I can't help you with locating one, but I simply must comment on the statement I made boldface in the quote......

You have my utmost respect for not diving in head first and then asking questions later.. As a huge fan of monitor lizards, I see so many cases of people buying baby lizards and trying to keep them in a fish tank.

You are only the third person in this last year whom I have read a post from that is going to have a permanent enclosure all done before purchasing the animal.

    KUDOS to you..

I know exactly who to talk to, so I will be back.. I like to read these things and look for things that don't make sense.

Meaning, a vast amount of published care sheets are rubbish, that was the whole reason behind me opening my web site, to discredit crap care sheets.

Case in point, there is a number of care sheets claiming that you can keep a monitor lizard in fish tanks with a screen top and aspen bedding.:O

My advice to you is to listen to Infernalis.

I've got a single red tegu, but I've had 3 at one time. They do eat like pigs, and they do hibernate half the year. So be prepared for owning a pet pile of mulch for months at a time.

When you build that enclosure, make sure to build it so it will hold a chimpanzee. Tegu lizards are like bulldozers and if they can pry a board off, they will. They will wedge a nose in, stick the front claws into a teeny crevice and pry. They also seem fond of trying to find spots to get stuck in. My Groo managed to pry the two boards that made her basking shelf apart enough to crawl through them, then as she climbed down, somehow pushed them back together so her tail got stuck, bent at an angle and she snapped the end off her tail. Needless to say, the basking shelf came out and I moved her hide box to act as a basking shelf. Sigh.
