Wow, what a bunch of bull! Like, I'm steamed enough to send hate mail, which I normally don't even waste my time with. This is the STUPIDEST thing I think I've seen. Really, a BP on the main page? Obviously these idiots have never handled, or seen really, one of these "brutal killers". :colbert: How is it possible for them to go from Steve Irwin's love the reptiles show to the CRAP they've been airing and pushing?? The misinformation they are giving people is ridiculous! I love the true/false question "Have pythons been known to kill their owner?" Wow, in THAT case, maybe they should also place a disclaimer on the "own a dog" and "own a horse" quizzes too since they kill by FAR more owners than snakes ever have or will. :rage:

While I agree that Animal Planet airs a LOT of bulls**t that's mostly fear propaganda, we also can't use "well, dogs/horses kill more people than snakes", because WAY more people own dogs and horses than people who own snakes. It's just not a valid point to make, and it doesn't make us look good.
We need to make valid points about SNAKES. Have snakes been known to kill people? Yes, it's happened. We can't ignore that, no matter how small the percentage. But the circumstances are usually stemmed from some aspect of poor keeping. We need to illustrate well-known keepers who properly house, feed, and care for their reptiles, and raise awareness that (just like dogs) there are no "bad" or "evil" snakes, just bad ownership. If we can keep showing our hobby and passion in a positive light, instead of lowering ourselves to name-calling and finger-pointing at all our naysayers, we can be the bigger people and others will look at us and go "okay, so they're handling this maturely and they seem very sure and factual". Some people will become more people, and they will start going "hey, what are you talking about?" when others start spewing those Animal Planet/PETA nonsense.
The power of word-of-mouth has an amazing impact, and it's our best weapon against the fear propaganda that's out there.

Nice, that's what I always say, social networking is going to bring things to light that have always been in the dark.

random googling shows 9.3 mil horses in 2008
another random googling from a forum post in 2008 puts captive snakes at 7.3 mil
HSUS says there are 78.2 dogs in the usa
so if the numbers are close to the truth, random googling shows 20 horse deaths per year, 31 dog deaths a year, and constrictor snakes at 1 every other year.
so now if we could just find actual sources for any of the numbers I just threw out.... I think there's a pretty strong case
using those numbers your 5 times more likely to be killed by a dog and 31 times more likely to be killed by a horse
