    heat pad /probe problem
i have a zilla heat pad, a hydrofarm thermostat and were using a tub.The problem im having is the thermostat probe is greating a huge air pocket right around the probe, and to top it off from trying diff ways to keep it stuck to the bottom including taping the mat to the bottom of the tub with foil tape it wont stick and heats maybe a half dollar size .Any advice is appreciated we took the mat off and are using a heat pad for people we had laying around which is working for now but no what we want since it goes off after 2 hrs.

The probe should be inside the tub.

    Not true at all.

I'm having trouble visualizing what the exact issue is with the probe. Are you worried about the probe not staying put or an air pocket between the tub/UTH?

on the bottom of the tub the probe is sticking up so high that there is a huge air bubble around an inch air bubble in a complete circle around the probe and now the glue is giving up so now the mat wont stick. kinda like the logo in your sig the green snake is the air pocket and the black is the probe. we tried hot gluing the probe inside the tub but that doesnt work to well .

Gotcha. For UTHs like that I'd secure the probe on the bottom of the UTH, or just carefully unstick the UTH altogether, secure the probe, and then just remove/add the tub as needed and secure the UTH onto the surface. It's hard to explain?

For example, I have my UTHs secured to a shelf. Then I secure the probe onto the UTH. That way I can remove/add the tub from the UTH for cleaning, feeding, etc. Does that make sense? The UTH doesn't have to be that secured to the tub, it just needs to be close enough to give off heat...

Edit: No the probe should definitely be on the outside of the tub. Thermostat probes should be secured directly to the heat source, thermometer probes should be inside over the hotspot...this keeps it from a) shorting due to urine, poo, water spillage, etc and b) moving!

If the probe is under the tub then you will not get the correct temp in the tub!

Thats what the thermometer is for. If its not measuring hot enough you turn up the thermostat some.

That is why you use thermometers and/or temp guns to adjust the temps inside the tub.....
