Well you are going to need a thermostat for the heat source...they range from $30-$150 depending on the quality/features

    Budget:http://www.amazon.com/Hydrofarm-MTPR.../dp/B000NZZG3S

    High end: http://spyderrobotics.com

Then you will either need a temperature gun or a digital thermometer with a probe. both can be purchased here: http://www.reptilebasics.com/thermometers

it really depends on how many tubs the rack will have and which thermometer you got from petco... most of them are terrible.

a temp gun is nice because it allows you to check multiple tubs easily (as they will all be slightly different.

How many tubs is the rack going to have?

Paired with a good thermostat that thermometer should be ok, but with multiple tubs it will be a pain to move the prove to check each tub.

i would get each tub its own on of these and ummm to be complty honest i dont know how many tubs im thinking 1 rack for adults 4-5 then a racks for juvs and babys that can hold 5-10 and if need be i can always build another adult one

Well if you want to get one for each tub then that's fine... but it will be cheaper to just get a temp gun in the long run.

if you plan on having 5 adults and 10 juvis/babies. $7(for thermometer) x 10(tubs)= $70 with out tax.
temp gun $20-$50 and 1000X times easier than dealing with thermometers.

the hydro is a thermostat not a thermometer. The hydro will tell you what temp you have the heat set at but not how hot it is inside the tubs. example i have my herpstat set at 94.5 degrees for my rack, on the hot side of the cage it is only 90-91 degrees. the temp gun will tell you hot hot inside the cage is the hydro will tell you how hot you have the heat set to.
think of it as you thermostat(hydro) in your house, is set to 70 degrees, it doesnt mean that every room is 70 degrees.
