Question about shed and pattern

Why do some say to look at the shed to see if there is a pattern on it? Does the pattern on a shed mean something? Or does the lack of pattern on a shed mean something?

Ghost bps won't have a pattern on their shed, so if someone can't tell if the snake is a hypo or not you can look at the shed.
