Dumeril's Boa

I already have a Pastel BP and was thinking about getting a Dumeril's Boa at the Repticon Expo in Baton Rouge this weekend.
I was just wondering how their temperaments are. I've heard mixed things about them - some are docile and some are mean. My wife is kinda on the fence about me getting another snake because the little BP we have struck at her once (didn't bite just struck). Now she won't even get close to it.
They're only $95 for a '12 Dumeril baby and I figure getting them young would be easier to tame down.
Anyone have one and is it like a BP? Calmer or more aggressive?

My bf has a baby and she's very calm and laid back. The guy we get our feeders from has a large female and from what my bf says she's just as nice and calm too. Usually I hear that they're very well mannered, and even if you get one that's a little nippier with handling they should calm just fine. I think starting with a baby is a good idea, just prepare for a large viv when it's an adult.

I had one. It was docile but a bit flighty when getting her out of the cage but once she was out she was very calm and curious but not all over the place. They are awesome IMO, but they can be picky eaters.

I have a dumeril that I got in January as a baby and she is a sweetheart and a great eater.

I have a 3yo female who is easily my favorite and the most docile in my collection.

I don't know who told you about any dumerili being mean, but I am hard pressed to believe they actually ever dealt with any themselves (or at least any "mean" ones). I've heard dumerili in the wild being described as so docile that they took well to handling and never attempted to strike defensively. Furthermore, I've never heard of any individual being bitten by a captive dumerili (this is not to say it has never happened, as I'm sure it may well have around feeding time, but the rarity of such an event should be testament to how docile the species is).

Mine is 5 years old. He's never struck at me. He's pretty curious and relaxed, except at feeding time. He is an aggressive feeder... :gj:

I have a 2 year old male Dumerils that flat out refuses to eat anything but live. We have tried just about everything possible to transition him to f/t. He went on a 3 month food strike because we were trying to stubborn him out of eating live. We finally gave in and have been making the 45 min drive every other week to get him food he can kill. The pet store in town is hit or miss on if they have rat pups, and we found a pet store in Joplin, MO that always carries them. I agree on the picky eaters. We have been having problems with him ever since we got him.

Temperment wise, he is the best snake. He will find a comfortable spot and just chill out. I can only think of two times he ever snapped at me, and both times were when he was a baby.

I think mine is an exception, not the norm. I have heard of others with Dumerils that have had no problems like I've had. I think they are beautiful snakes and wish they were more popular.
