Permits?

Hi just wondering if people actually get permit from fish and wildlife to keep their reptiles and is it possible to get permits after you already bought them from a dealer?

It really depends on which permits you mean. If you need a permit for a particular species, you really really had better get the permit before you get the animal, because if you get caught, there's the fines, the seizure of not only that one animal but possibly more, restrictions on what you can own, and no chance whatsoever of getting the permit then.

So it'll depend on what state, what animals, what permits, what permit system, and how lenient the local officials are about you owning the animal BEFORE you get a permit.

yes check with your local ag department or/and fish and game office. ( ag deptartment issues permits in Delaware) but I lucked out and could classified for a sales permit ( which is cheaper and allows me to breed ball pythons) plus it cheaper thant buying x permits every 3 years when all I need is a single permit every year. ( rought guestt about 2k verus the single 25 bucks.

I found this today and thought it was good to know, if you live in Texas.

(1) the sales receipt for the transaction is a temporary recreational controlled exotic snake permit valid for 21 days from the date indicated on the receipt;

These are the snakes that Texas regulates.

(2) Controlled exotic snake--Any live snake that is:

(A) a venomous snake not indigenous to Texas;

(B) any of the following:

(i) African rock python (Python sebae);

(ii) Asiatic rock python, (Python molurus);

(iii) green anaconda, (Eunectes murinus);

(iv) reticulated python, (Python reticulatus);

(v) southern African python, (Python natalensis); or

(C) a hybrid of any species listed in this paragraph.

These are the two types of permits Texas has.

$20.00 – Recreational Controlled Exotic Snakes (RCES) Permit (Item 580): Allows posssession and/or transportation of an unlimited number of snakes, but does not allow sale. Sales receipt for purchase of affected snake serves as a 21-day temporary RCES permit for purchaser.

$60.00 – Commercial Controlled Exotic Snakes (CCES) Permit (Item 581): Allows possession, transportation, and/or sale of an unlimited number of snakes. CCES permit required and must be maintained on premises for each permanent place of business. Legible copy of CCES permit required on permittee's person if regulated activity occurs off-site. Daily activity log for purchases and sales must be maintained and available for inspections
