Shipping in the heat

I'm getting a new pickup soon and wondering how it works to ship in the heat. I'm getting it shipped from OK and they haven't had a day under 90 degrees in weeks and I don't see any below 90 on the 10 day forecast... it also wont be below low-mid 80s on my end.

Is this not advisable? Any tips or techniques I can share with the seller? They are somewhat new to the ball game and may not be versed in hot weather shipping.

The three temps that matter are the temp where/when the snake is shipping, at the intermediate hub (Indianapolis, Memphis, etc.), and at destination up through a couple hours after delivery is due (if not being held at the local hub). It might be over 90deg as a high in OK, but what is it when he will be shipping (~6pm)? I worry more about the hub, but most of what I send seems to go through Memphis, which is the devil's summer retreat when his home is too cool!

If you are uncomfortable, ask him to wait. Anyone who cares about the safety of the animals they produce will be willing to feed for a few extra weeks rather than risk death.

I agree. If they're shipping around 6-7 pm, and temps are below the mid to upper 80s at that time, that's fine. Then they'll arrive in Memphis or Indianapolis at night, so check their lows. Then make sure that it's cool where you live just in case the package gets misrouted and doesn't arrive on time. If all three of those temps are good, then you should be OK, but it sounds like temps might be a bit high on your end, so you might want them to ship to "hold" at your nearest FedEx hub. Then you can pick up the package in the morning when it arrives at the hub. Make sure you get a tracking number so that you can follow the route and call if something goes awry.

If I do hold at location it's going to be sitting in a FedEx store. Is that going to be very air-conditioned?

Is it more of a problem if the snake is a little hot for a few hours or a little cold for a few hours? Let's say 95 or 70

Over-heating will damage a snake faster and more permanently than a couple of degrees on the low side. I've never been to my Fedex hub during the summer where they had it anywhere near as low as 70deg.

When it's 90 outside, do I need to be concerned about FedEx carriers and holding locations heating up to 95+?

You can call the hub and give special instructions to the manager. Ask for them to hold your package in the office, which should be air conditioned. But ask about the AC or a room with AC. Tell them that the package is sensitive to extreme temps and is perishable.

98 deg at 6pm to 78 at night

Mid-point = Memphis, TN

83 deg at night to 74 in the morning

End = Chelmsford, Ma

75 deg overnight/morning to 78 mid-morning


Would you do this?
