ASF with no ears?

So I picked up some ASFs the other day at a show and all my tan ASFs with red eyes don't have any ears that protrude out of their head. (see pics)

It's kind of hard to tell in the pics but you get the idea. Is this genetic? a deformity? something I need to worry about or is it ok?
Also I've had some bad luck with aggressive and vicious ASFs in the past... Other than selective breeding and killing off biters is there any way to "gain trust" with them? Any suggestions for a weary handler? lol

Not sure about the ears but as for temperament issues...I get my hands in there and touch them a lot. Every few days. It just gets them used to the fact that I will be coming into the cage. I haven't been bitten yet. Maybe my asfs are just nice. I start petting the pile of babies once they start walking around a bit. No one seems to mind too much!

I have seen, in one of my larger colonies, females that have their ears chewed down. They look a lot like that.
