Where to buy frozen rats

Hello. Where would you recommend I buy frozen rats from? Does anyone know of a local rodent breeder (live or frozen) around the San Antonio, TX area? If I can find something local I'd prefer giving them a try before having to pay those high shipping cost. If not then I will have to might the bullet and go with an out of state breeder. Right now I have a baby BP that weighs in at a whopping 65g. I would be ordering rat fuzzies. Any ideas about how many I should order since it will be growing pretty fast I imagine. I will put him on a 5 day schedule. Thanks for any help!!

Check for local reptiles shows http://www.texasreptiles.com/ rodent breeders sell live and f/t there. There is also http://www.bigcheeserodents.com/ at Fort Worth, Tx but with just one bp, it's cheaper for you to buy locally.
Buy around 10 fuzzies and also buy the next size so you'll have a stock when he finishes the 10.

Check www.craigslist.org. I found a rat breeder who lives a few minutes away, now I barely even pay for snake food.

ok, so i fed my baby ball a fuzzie tonight. Stuck perfectly and finished him off with no problem. I would like to feed him F/T just because I think it's better overall and in the long run. He currently weighs 65g (before tonight's feeding). My question is I would love to order F/T, but not quite sure how to order the quantities. I'm planning on feeding on a 5 day schedule. Right now I'm considering getting 25 rat fuzzies, and 25 rat pups. On a 5 day feeding schedule this would last 250 days...so about 8 1/2 to 9 months. Does this seem about right? Should I order less fuzzies and more rat pups, or vice versa? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!

Hi,

I wouldn't order more than 6 months supply unless your freezer has a very high rating.

You can also double up on small meals for a time before needing to move up to a larger size.

But with smaller orders ( where you only have one snake ) it sometimes really doesn't save much as you cannot really take advantage of bulk orders to offset shipping.

So check local sources as well to get an idea on pricing from both options.

You can also buy frozen at Petco/Petsmart, however, their selection is limited. They only sell pinkie mice, fuzzy mice, small mice, and small/medium/large rats. I'm in the same boat. I want to get my 53g BP on rat pinkies to help her gain weight.

Thanks. I was looking into that company earlier today. they seemed pretty good. It's just that I have one bp and so ordering for one makes it a bit difficult. There are not many places here to buy quality frozen rats. Thanks for your help.

I looked at petsmart, but there selections is not very good and they also looked quite small for the suggested sizes. thanks for replying and good luck with your guy.

I only buy a month or two's worth at a time. Just my thing. It can be a hit or miss buying locally, some don't take as good of care of their rodents as I believe they should. Make sure you ask if the rodents are freshly killed/frozen. And if you can have a look at how they have them set up, you'll know how healthy they are. I have had a lot of misses before finding my local breeder I buy from monthly, who doesn't put his rodents down until the day before they're bought. I've bought from Rodent Pro before, and the rats I got from them smelled bad/went bad quickly. Other than that I haven't bought from the "big" breeders so I can't give you my opinion on them. Hope that helps a little. I would just experiment with local breeders til you find one you really like.
