What is she?

Hi!

I'm new to bpnet!

I obtained my bp from someone without the want to care for her. I'm just curious what "type" she is, as in morph. From my personal observation, and research, she looks basic Pastel. But, she is my first snake.

Also, she came to me with a glass tank, mesh screen lid, day and night lamps, easter bowl for "swimming" as I call it for what she does. I'm having a VERY difficult time with the humidity! Surprised aren't ya! :P out has UTH, add well as misting system. I use two them. One with humidity gauging. I've covered about 80% of the screen with foil, and nothings staying very consistent, I don't wasn't to stress her out!

Help this first time snake mommy!

Anything about the humidity?

Looks like a normal to me too. And that pinky feeder is much too small for her, I'd put her on at least mouse hoppers/adults or rat pups.

For humidity, what size tank is she in? Is the UTH you're using regulated with a thermostat?

Stop she should me on one strep up from the pinky?

Yes the UTH is with thermostat. Ten gallon tank.

Pretty normal. Definitely get her on hopper mice or rat pinks though! That pinky is way too small.

So the size of her food may also be attributing to the reason why she is tending to be a tad more day-time active aside from the humidity issue? I mean the temp is great, from what I've researched I'm pretty dead-on. It's just that humidity level.

Is the mister a good idea, or should I switch to a fogger? And is the covered screen okay or should I be investigating a more solid type of top covering?

I am so in love with her! I hate that I haven't been able to master this issue. She's been with me nearly a month. It's also really frustrating to speak with the "prefessionals" where I live who advised me the pinkies were where she needed to be. I feel like she's my child! I would say I feel like a freak, but I'm sure you all know where I'm at with that!

Could be, underfed BPs will roam in search of food so I think she'll settle a bit when she's on appropriate sized feeders.

How are you measuring temps and humidity levels? What thermostat do you have?

For the mister I would be worried about it getting too humid in the tank, have you tried putting a damp towel on the top of the tank to see if that raised humidity?

What % is the humidity usually (ie not when you mist or spray but when the tank is "dry")?

One therm. the top measures the humidity which drops all the way to 20% without mist. When I'm there to monitor I can maintain it about 50%. The temp on that side of the tank is usuall 76-80.

The other is a strip one. Reminds me of a strip of tape almost. And the colors just appear when it's obtained a certain temp. On that side it's usually always 82-88. The strip is on the side with the water bowl, and the mister usually shoots midway and on into the side with the humidity gauge. I've tried using a bottle to spray the inside and covering the screen with a damp cloth, but that didn't really seem to do it too well either. I just recently bought the UTH, and that's been the only was I've been able to master the temperature inside the tank itself. Before that it was a steady 70 all the time. I suspect the air in my house is very dry, which I've never noticed before Isis. But it's been so hard to even remotely fall comfortable with her humidity. I know this stuff doesn't just happen and no one's a snake god over night, I just want her to be comfortable!!!

It sounds like you described the stick on guages and the strip ones used for fish, both IMO are very inaccurate for reptiles. I would pick up an Accurite digital thermometer from Walmart, roughly $12. I wouldn't trust what either of the thermometers you're using says, and they're probably reading way off of what the actual temps and humidity levels are.

It sounds like your UTH is unregulated, a thermostat is different than a thermometer. A thermostat controls the UTH so it doesn't overheat, and left unregulated UTH's can get hot enough to seriously burn/kill your snake.

Ambient temps should be in the 80's and your hot side temps 90-92.
