Panacur

Just got a call from vet my snake has pinworms. They want to treat with panacur. I was wondering if anyone has used this before? And is it safe to feed while being treated? Also they said I could inject the f/t mouse then feed. Any thoughts on this? Thanks for help.

Panacur is often prescribed in that manner - you inject it into a feeder and then feed the snake.

Just got out of the vets office and I need to give the panacur once a day for five days. Does this sound right? I've read once a week and also every 2 to 3 weeks. And also does anyone have any tips to administering it with out injuring the little guy?

I don't know about dosage, but it sounds like you'll be having to get in into his mouth somehow..

I'm not as vet, so please don't substitute anything I say for the advice of a qualified herp vet.

I have never given panacur more than once a week, but I have also known it to be dosed daily for three to five days. The majority of panacur is excreted (not metabolized) so some vets feel that it is more effective when dosed daily.

Probably but I have seen a web site that suggests not to feed on panacur because it empties the bacteria of the stomach. So I'm not sure if I should skip a meal and give all of it orally or feed with the first dose.

I used this several years ago when one of my snakes turned up with pinworm. (I dosed the entire collection, just in case). I open the mouth with a rubber frosting spatula, and insert the syringe (no needle) slightly into the throat. Depress slowly, remove syringe, and the snake will give you a horrified look as it slowly closes its mouth. (I'm guessing it tastes yucky).

I 100% tell you now, you will need a second pair of competent hands to do this, lol.

Do what the vet recommended. Also buy some Benebac from Petco (or any other pet store - it can be found in the bird section). It is a probiotic for birds and reptiles. Add it to the water bowl.

Thank-you everyone for the help. Just when things were going good worms oh well could be worse.

What symptoms were you seeing that made you take it to the vet?
