Experienced opinions needed...

I recently hatched another clutch of Pewter Pied stuff and I'm trying to determine if the lighter animal is a low quality Sterling or a high quality Pewter. Both pictured are clutch mates. Thanks.

Faded Pewters like that mean there's an extra gene in play. So I would say sterling.

I say pewter. If its female and your selling it. ;) j/k I would say sterling.

I don't know if you consider me experienced, but in my humble opinion, I vote for sterling.

Same here pewter left sterling right.

I wouldn't call myself "experienced," but the one on the right reminds me an awful lot of my female pewter possible het pied.

My vote would be pewter on the left, pewter "visual het pied" on the right ... But maybe that's wishful thinking on my part that a super crazy faded look like that means it's het pied :rolleyes:

From my experience, I have to disagree with that idea. We've been producing Pewter het Pieds for 5 seasons now. The first two seasons produced animals that look rather typical, other than the striping that is thought to be associated with the Pied gene. The fading was not really noticed until the third year when we began breeding back to the original Pewter female and my Pastel het Pied females. This particular breeding was from three possible males, Pewter Pied, Pied, and Pewter het Pied. All hatchlings have perfect het Pied markers so it could have been any of the males. I am not convinced the fading has anything to do with being het Pied......although, I do think your possible het is a definite het. :gj:

Notice the striping in all of the het Pieds. This is something we didn't really note until the second season. We seemed to notice the correlation around the same time others did. It comes from the Cinny/BP side of the breeding when combined with the Pied gene.

Thank you all for the help. We have more exciting clutches on the way. Waiting on a clutch of Pewter Pied X Pastel het Pied, Enchi 66% het Pied X Pewter Pied, and more. We are hoping the Enchi will add more pattern to the mix.
