How Gullible are We?
"A freshman at a Junior High school won first prize at the Science Fair. He was attempting to show how conditioned we have become to the alarmists spreading fear of everything in our environment.
In his project he urged people to sign a petition demanding strict control or total elimination of the chemical "dihydrogen monoxide." And for plenty of good reasons, since:
it can cause excessive sweating and vomiting;
it is a major component in acid rain;
it can cause severe burns in its gaseous state;
accidental inhalation can kill you;
it contributes to erosion;
it decreases effectiveness of automobile brakes;
it has been found in tumors of terminal cancer patients.
He asked 50 people if they supported a ban of the chemical. Forty-three said yes, six were undecided, and only one knew that the chemical was water.
The title of his prize winning project was, "How Gullible Are We?"
The conclusion is obvious."

Wow! Put things in their molecular terms and people are easily confused! Lol. :)

Okay, I laughed out loud with this one. I absolutely love how frequently people pass on information as 'correct', even if they just heard it in passing.
Well played, freshman, well played.

LOL, oh jeez. What an awsome experiment idea... fantastic. :gj: I wonder if the people who signed to ban the "chemical" found out afterwards that it was just water?

Re: How Gullible are We?
Oh No! I got completely soaked with this chemical this morning. :O Maybe I should take a shower to wash it off... :rofl:

Haha, that's great.

I guess it's probably a good thing that his teachers don't watch Showtime. Penn and Teller did this exact same on their TV show, "Bull$hi#", with the exact same reasons at an environmental rally in 2003 (S1E13 - Environmental Hysteria). Very funny though.
