George's first meal....

Well, George finally ate for me! After a full month in my care, he took a crawler rat a couple nights ago. Woohoo!
He hadn't lost much weight, but he was only 55g to start out! He's such a cute little guy! Hopefully he'll keep eating and grow like a weed! Just had to share! He was almost six weeks old before he took his first meal!

Just a wee snake! Glad to hear he's eating and that he's starting with rats. Now that he's had a nice meal, he can come to appreciate the virtues of eating and get to be a big snake. Was it p/k, f/t, or live? If you got him started on p/k or f/t rat, even better!

that's awesome news... how often do they take that long to begin feeding?

Of the three I obtained as hatchlings, that was the longest. The other two took three weeks. He took live, just because I had been offering it to him for a month. That would have gotten expensive, throwing away 2 fuzzies a week! Hopefully P/K next time!

I've had mixed results with hatchlings starting eating before or after I pull what hair I have left out. This year for some reason most of mine seemed to take a few weeks after first shed to start. However, interestingly the exception was my last clutch (which I think are George’s siblings) that all ate right at about a week after first shed. Why some seem to take their time I don't know. At one point I thought it was the big hatchlings from big eggs that presumably had lots of yolk who took their time but I also had another good sized clutch from a small first time female (i.e. small eggs and small hatchlings) that was my slowest one this year. They all eventually started eating but some took more than a month and really had me worried.

I bet George will really get going now. His sister (assuming he is the snake I’m thinking of) is nearly 100 grams and going into her 2nd shed. Not bad for as small as these guys started out.
