I use my still camera for HD videos. A Sony cybershot TX10. Was about $300 but does a great job at pics and video. There are other models in that series closer to your price point.

Also get a tripod. Makes all the difference in world.

Canon Powershot A520: $60 max on Ebay.

Light box (Part of a set bought for $30 on Ebay).

    Full natural sunlight

The camera you get is a bit less important than learning how to take advantage of its strengths, and avoid its weaknesses. Take a zillion test shots in all sorts of different lighting, and figure out what your camera can do.

I don't have a 'good camera', but there you go. The next model I get will have a stabilizer, and all sorts of nifty stuffy, but for now? I can get what I need from this one.

while it is true its not the camera that makes the photo, it sure makes it easier with a nicer camera. And it does mean something if your quality of image is unusable because the cameras sensor is simply put inadequate :-)

That being said, canon has a lot of small point and shoot cameras that I would highly recommend, the only downside being that you can't take FULL manual control of the situation which is how I shoot nearly always. . . Those start a little bit more expensive, but sometimes can be had for around $300 on amazon used or refurbished or just on special.

Fuji, also makes great cameras. They get overlooked quite often, but I would never undermind their ability to take a great shot. Before I can make a specific recommendation I would need to know what is most important to you, things like zoom, high megapixels, obviously video is :-) but is video more important than stills? Feel free to Private message me with the answers, and I'll work with you best I can to find out what fits your needs best. I worked in selling photography equipment for 4 years with no unsatisfied customers! I also shoot a large line of equipment from pocket point and shoot Canons, to high end professional DSLR equipment with 1500+ dollar lenses alone!
