Seems many use the UTh UTH'S on plastic tubs. Says on the package not to use on plastic, is that just a precaution that's over blown?

Just make sure the UTH is regulated so it doesn't overheat and melt the plastic. I haven't had problems with UTH on the bottom of my tubs.

good question. If the uth is controlled by a T-stat as it should really be there is no issue. If not controlled I'd not. personally I have used a sheet of glass 1/8 inch thick and attach the uth to this and set the tub on the glass. It is also easier to clean. the downside is the uth runs hotter than it would directly on the tub. In very cool rooms it may not be able to produce enough heat to get the hot spot correct.

Hydrofarm or repti-temp 500r.
The UTH should be stuck to the shelf and the tub sits on it, there is no reason to attach it to the tub.

"Affordable" varies from person to person. What type of price range are you looking at?
Under $50
$50-$120
Over $120

depends on what affordable is. hydrofarm is the cheapest I'd recommend with reservations. herpstat basic is 90$ to me that is quite affordable.

I use UTHs on all my tubs with no issues. I would suggest putting foil on the sticky side of the UTH and then use foil tape to stick it on the tub. Makes the UTH reusable. =]
