Using Bins without a rack system
I want to switch over to bins from aquariums, eventually I want to get a rack system. For now though, I thought I would ask if anyone else uses bins without a rack and what your setup looks like. I'm a newb who needs ideas because I don't have a creative bone in my body.

    Thanks:)

    So by step with pictures:

One thing to consider. How cold does the room that the tubs will be in get?

Thanks, I am going to go identical with the tub setup, with the exception of mounting the uth. I am going to attach it directly to the bin. I am looking for ideas on shelves and whatnot. I have a sterilite utility shelf unit I was thinking about using. And the room we have them in is kept at 77 during the spring/summer/fall, lower during the winter, so I will have to get a space heater.

I used to have stand alone tubs on a utility storage shelf. But I eventually upgraded to a rack due to convenience.

I don't have any photos, but it was just tubs lined across the shelf w/ flexwatt running under all the tubs. One strip of flexwatt for each shelf saved a lot of money compared to individual UTH on each tub. Not to mention I was able to attach less cords to the thermostat at a time this way.

Hmmm, that's an idea. I wish my husband and I were handy people, I've seen some really great homemade racks. Installing the flexwatt and having to solder wires is what scares the crap out of me.

If you order from http://www.reptilebasics.com/flexwatt-heat-tape, they can prewire your flexwatt for you as long as you order all the required parts and leave them instructions in the final order notice. They don't solder, but they do use the metal clips w/ a plastic insulator to attach wires to the flexwatt. They do a good job and are pretty cheap.

And once the order arrives, all you have to do is tape down the flexwatt to the shelf since it's already ready to go.

I used to use this setup. The bins had tops on them. I cant claim all the credit for building it, just the idea of it. My stepdad used to be a carpenter so he helped me out.

The easiest, most inexpensive and safest way to hold tubs with lids without "building" a rack is to use a book shelf...
    http://i968.photobucket.com/albums/a...amineshelf.jpg

After nailing the shelves in places so that the tubs barely slide in between them you wire up the heat tape, tape it to the shelves(not the tub!) and plug it into a thermostat.

Simple yet effective and tubs with lids hold in humidity as well or better than a rack system, the only hassle being dealing with lids...
