    Long Road Trip...Advice?
Hey everyone! My girlfriend and I are driving across country from Pennsylvania to California. Woooahh is this a daunting thing. It's not even for pleasure. She got an internship all the way over there, and she will need a vehicle.

We're looking at four 12 hour stints in a tiny car. We are loaded with music and a few books on tape. Beyond that, I'm still scared it will be a rough trip.

I'm looking for advice on things we can do! What are fun games you play in the car to keep from going crazy? Does anyone have general advice about a long car trip?

Alphabet game, you try to find every letter of the alphabet in order on road signs.

Just take it easy. If you can, stop at a few interesting sites for a day or even a few hours. It will take a bit longer but it will make the trip fun. I always bring music we like to sing to on long trips, lol. Mad Libs are always fun to do together too (if you can read in the car and don't get car sick) . GL on your trip!

    Retired trucker here.

Make sure you take frequent stops, even if they're relatively short. Your body appreciates the chance to move around.

If you get tired, don't hesitate to pull over and either stop for the night or at least take a nap/switch drivers.

Snacks and plenty to drink are a must. Also a good idea on trips that long to drag along a gallon of wiper fluid and some coolant. You never know. Make sure people know your route, so if you don't show up when/where you're supposed to they know where to look.

Other than that, just hang onto the wheel and keep an eye on what's going on around you. 99% of being a good driver is compensating for the not-so-good drivers out there. :D

The best piece of advice I can give you is, don't try and talk the whole way. You'll just end up frustrating each other. The sound of silence can sometimes be a good thing...

Oh yeah, Flying J and Pilot stations have the cleanest bathrooms.

The bathroom thing made me laugh! So true! You never want to risk a sketchy bathroom on a long road trip .

Audiobooks :D Got started on them when I was commuting 2 hours a day and MAN it makes the time past quick!

And don't feel like you have to fill every second with an activity. Sometimes just driving through nice scenery with a good song on the radio and looking out the window can be the most peaceful thing.

Cool, I especially like the info about the cleanest bathrooms...That's definitely a good thing to know. I think it's annoying how often I have to stop for a bathroom break on long car trips. Is that TMI? :D

I really wish we had the time to stop and enjoy some sights, but I am just dropping her off and getting back to work ASAP or else it will cost me some valuable rent money.

@KatStover: I downloaded plenty of audiobooks. I wonder how long it will take for us to get sick of them during a 40 hour car ride :P
