Hidden gene?
Can somebody please explain the hidden gene theory? Is that related only to womas?
-
Hidden gene womas are not the same as regular womas. They are a completely different morph. The name just throws people off. As far as what the gene it self is doing I do believe it's just like any other co dom. But I'm not 100% sure on that part. Hopefully someone else can clear that up if I'm wrong.

Re: Hidden gene?
Hidden Gene Woma is just a single gene morph. The homozygous (super) HGW is called a pearl. It is normally lethal.

From my understanding the Hidden Gene in HGW is just part of the name. It's confusing cus you think something weird is going on but it's just a name. Im pretty sure it works just like all other regular co-doms. It is either passed on or not.

NERD originally thought that it was woma plus an extra gene, but in subsequent breedings decided that it is actually a separate co-dominant morph. They took a stab at calling it a 'Type 2 Woma', but the HG Woma name seems to have stuck.
It's not related to the woma morph, which appears to be a dominant gene, not a co-dominant gene. Womas will not produce a pearl, and there is a breeder who claims to have a homozygous woma which looks the same as heterozygous womas.
Think of it as being similar to the 'desert ghost'. It's called a ghost, but it's unrelated to orange/green/yellow ghost hypo lines, and it's also not a 'true ghost' (which is a combo morph).
Names can lead to a lot of confusion.
Additionally, when people say 'hidden gene', they're not always talking about the hidden gene woma. There are other genes out there might be referred to that way--for example, the 'Daddy gene' that turns lesser platinums into platinums.

Sometimes, I think I would be easier if we just numbered BP morphs...
"I'll have a #86, please!"

LOL. Yea, number them like a fast food drive thru. " I'll have a number 2, Super Sized please".
(Translation) " I'll have a Super Pastel please". HaHaHa. It would be much easier that way.

I did, but can't remember it. It was one of the big breeders. No doubt someone else will pipe in, in this thread.
