When you first get your snake...

I did research all over the internet about care for bp's and they say that they like smaller spaces so it's okay to have a smaller tank for a juvenile. also, you're not supposed to handle them for the first week so they can acclimate?

It's okay to start with a smaller tank but be prepared to upgrade.

And they suggest not to handle until you've had a successful feeding 3 times in a row.

Yes and Yes.

Ball Pythons can stress out if they are in an enclosure that is too big. To put it into perspective hatchlings can comfortably live in something the size of a shoe box.

Once you get your ball python you want to let them settle into their new home for a week or so before any handling or feeding. After that I wait until they have fed 3 times in a row before I start too much handling.

Yes, you are correct. I would stay away from glass tanks. Tubs or PVC cages are much better for BP's

I would suggest that you wait a week after getting one before you try and feed him/her. I would refrain from handling him/her until he/she has eaten 3 straight meals (spaced at least 4 days apart)

Another small piece of advise.... (one I had a hard time following LOL)

If yours refuses a meal or two try not to freak out too much just double check your temps humidity etc. Make sure you have two similar hides one on the hot side and one on the cool. If it all checks out just be patient.

I just got my first and have had a few missed meal but she started eating again. Everyone here is a great help and will help you through it. If it refuses for a while make sure you are feeding the same as the breeder because it is a big enough change with the new habitat, the food change may end up being too much.

Excellent to see you have researched before getting it. I did too and as simple as it all sounds on paper it can still be a bit of a challenge but much easier if you have some homework done.

Thank you! Well, I plan to get a juvenile-sized snake, I have a little ten gallon glass tank and plan to upgrade once it has started eating regularly. Should I get a red light and also a heat pad? only one of those? one for each side? I will have to buy a different tank or use a tub if I need two hides..:snake:

If you haven't checked out the care sheet on this site please do it is a really good one.

You may need both. Make sure you have a good thermometer and a way of controlling the heat mat. If you can swing it I highly recommend using a good thermostat (I use a herpstat).

You need 90-92 on the hot side surface and 78-80 on cool. Ambient should be between 80-85. Humidity between 50-60. It is very important o have it setup for a week or so to make sure you have consistent temps and humidity. I am not an expert but it is easier in you and the snake if you have everything ready. It may take a little playing around.
