Cooling or not?

Ok so I'll be breeding next year and I was just wondering about the cooling period. I read in the faq's that it is not necessary. I was just wondering who does and who doesn't and what's the success rare if you don't.

I haven't artificially cooled since our first year but our basement naturally cools down in the winter. Temps got down to 70 in the room & 75-ish on the cool side of most of the tubs w/ 86-89 on the warm side. Now that the weather is warming up its 75-ish in the room and 80 cool/89 warm in the tubs. Out of 13-14 parings we should be getting 11-12 clutches this year :).

Same here, I allow ambient room temps to drop to 70 degrees while maintaining the 90 to 93 degree hot spot temps year around.

Good to know. Thanks. So I don't really need a therm with temp drop. Just let the ambient air in the room drop.

Some people swear by it, some people swear against it. It's pretty much a personal preference kinda thing, like so many of the other care variables.

Personally, I do not cool my animals.

This - it seems to be entirely personal.

Me, I cool mine - I drop the hot spot to 87, 88, usually around the time of year that ambient temperatures drop down to the high 60s, low 70s. While I have had success without doing so, each year I've had the cooling period my girls all started ovulating etc like clockwork afterwards. My experience with it is that it makes things more predictable, which can be nice.

I'm one of those ones that swear by cooling!!! LOL Over the past 10 years I've tried it both ways and have much better success with night dropping...Plus I breed year round, I wouldn't have a much luck with that if I didn't cool...

Also my hot spot for breeders during the day is only 85... Night drop them to 75 ish...Gravid females go back to about 89 24/7 after a prelay shed.

As a test I have also let a few gravid females stay in night drop while gravid and they have laid perfect clutches...

I've never cooled. I just figure if the male is strong and is into molestation you wouldn't have a problem. That's just what I've seen though... So far the boys don't let me down.

Lol. I think for my first year I'll just keep the temps steady and see what happens.
