Loss of power

So I live in thunderstorm country and it got me thinking the other day, what do you do in the event of a power outage to heat your snakes? Do you use the heat packs you ship them with?

You should seriously looking into a generator. Even a small little one will produce enough wattage to heat your animals. If you get a large enough one, you can actually back feed circuits in your house and run what you need to. There is a ton of info out there about generators. That is what I do in case of a power outrage. I also have a fire place for worst case scenario.

This is a good question, was just talking with a friend about it actually XD You can also use hot water bottles, or maybe have an electricity generator to keep power going [like one of those small camping ones; not sure how well a large collection would fare on one of those though]. Heat packs are a good idea too, as long as proper care is taken so the reptile[s] won't get burned by them [not sure how hot some of them can get, but just incase].

I always keep a supply of 20 hour heat packs and a pillow case for each snake. If I lose power for too long I bag up the boys and throw them in with some heat packs till the power comes back up.

I lost power 8 times last year for more than 3 hours each time. the first time was late evening and only things were walmart and the truck stop. walmart didnt have any generators in stock so i went to the truck stop and got a power inverter that runs off of the car battery and used that to keep my uth's going. I know have a 6000 watt gas powered generator that powers the whole house. I am getting ready to move and have a building built for my animals and there is a standby automatic generator in the plans! 8 second delay and it kicks in automaticly! some sort of emergency power source is a must for me as i live in ohio and the winters can be unforgiving.

Do you have a fire place?
Heat up water and then pour it into water bottles. Make sure the water is only like 90-95 degrees with a temp gun. Then put the bottles right in the tubs with them. Im unsure how long that would last you though, the 20hr heat packs are probably a better route to go lol...:cool:
