"Joint projects"? - Not breeding loans
I was re-watching Justin Kobylka's video of that ridiculously awesome super enchi butter. He mentions that the snake is co-owned by him and a breeder in the UK in a "joint project". I was just wondering what exactly that meant in breeding terms. How would you co-own an animal? I imagine both parties split the cost of the animal, then split the profits from each clutch. Any comments or thoughts on this? Remember, it's co-ownership of the snake, not a breeding loan, so the snake is going to be kept for life. What if one of the breeders wants to sell the snake? How would that work o_O???
I don't plan on co-owning a snake anytime soon, but I see how it can be quite advantageous to a newb like myself. I would put $1500 into a $3000 snake that I think would be awesome in the future, but what do you do from there?

I imagine co-owning a snake is exactly how you explained it :P
2 people (or maybe more) split the cost of a snake, and split the profits of clutches etc.

It would require a good partnership with the person you are entering into the project with. It's less a specific animal and more a specific project you are going into - you both want to make the magic kitchen sink morph ball python, or something along those lines. So, you both go in on buying the necessary ingredients.
I am sure ahead of time they negotiate who gets what babies, but what I see as the easiest way to have an animal like that is to co-own a male, and then alternate the years you get it. So for one year, you breed it to all your females, then the next year ship it over and that guy breeds it to all his females.
Or maybe a guy just wants to see a project happen, but doesn't want to put forth the effort himself, or doesn't feel he has the know-how to make it happen. So he "invests" in the project, funding it in a way that is helpful to the guy taking care of the animal, and they take it from there.
If it's an expensive enough animal, it's worth all that shipping every year to have it father offspring. And it may not necessarily be a for life kind of thing - maybe after a few years, one guy doesn't want to do it anymore. I'm sure a trade of offspring or even just a bit of money can end the snake at one home in the end.
Still a scary prospect; you have to trust that the other person will care for the snake properly when it's their turn, and be honest in all dealings.

Great response Jen. Just curious. What would the person investing hope to get out of co-owning a ball python that they don't plan to breed first-hand? Money? A particular snake? My mom loaned me money for a snake, and she joked about how she's just putting forth her investment, and she doesn't mind if I pay her back or not. I know she's my mum, but I want to pay her back anyways :D. Feels good! In my case, would my mom just be hoping to get a specific amount of money back? She's definitely not interested in having a ball python to raise up and breed haha. I'm more interested in producing something brand spankin new! I want to be the first to produce a brand new designer morph, so I'll probably be holding back a lot of offspring.
Of course my situation is completely different from Justin's, as he is running a business, and is not JUST breeding for fun's sake lol. I just wanted to throw it out there as a different perspective :gj:.

You'd have to ask your mom what she would consider a return on her investment. Some people just want to see the animal, and perhaps get the first baby that becomes available, but they didn't want to spend the time to get there. They just wanted to see it happen.
Some people want to split the profits, and consider that the return on the investment. Everyone views it a little differently. :)

Both, as well as the opportunity to work with a project that they may not have the means to otherwise.

I had 2 friends split a project that went sour...
A Normal Female was bred with a Pastel Male, at the Female's house
The Male ended up locking with the female, but afterwards ended up dying because there was a malfunction.
In the end, the full clutch went to the Pastel's owner, since his snake had died while in the hands of the female's owner

Just like dog breeders stud out their animals. I am teaming up with a guy to lend my male enchi to. My female isn't and won't be ready for next season. So, rather than wasting a whole season, I want to see if my male is going to be a solid breeder. Splitting the clutch, and or he keeps the clutch, and I take home the best morph. (as long as it makes us both money)
And, we both learn what this enchi can do. Plus, making new friends.

Seems like we're veering a little off track here into the land of breeding loans...very specifically NOT what the OP was talking about:rolleyes:.

I edited mine to clarify it wasn't just for the money. I'm really looking into building up my collection. I came across this guy off kijiji (he was selling his 5 rack setup) We have been discussing future morphs to try and get out in the next little while.
