Opportunity.. Looking for advice.

Hey guys,

So I got into breeding to play with my ball pythons, and since than have branched out a little. I have the opportunity to buy a 9 y.o. Columbian RTB normal. She's proven and produced 45 eggs last season. I know the breeder personally and he's willing to give her to me for 300. Is it worth buying normal boas in the same sense that you would with a BP. And if so what do you guys think I should pick up as a male for her to breed with. He's selling off most of his breeding stock to make room for another species he wants to play with. So I have pretty much my pick of proven males.. I already have a pastel male RTB that I was gonna pair to my pastel female. Should I pair the male to both or should I get a new male. I don't know much about boa morphs and genetics. Thanks :)

he has some sweet morphs, and I'd order from him, but the by-law where I live doesn't allow them in the city limits. I'd rather not risk it.

If you have the room, the time, and knowledge (as well as funds) why not?

It really depends on what you want to do. I don't think I would breed a pastel boa to a normal female since I believe that is one morph that was more line breed and you might not get a good result from that pairing. If you had something like a hypo or an albino that would give you what you would expect. Hypo is an incomplete dominate morph with boas so half your litter should be hypos and half should be normals and of course breeding an albino to a normal would produce nothing but het albinos.

I'm biased and love my hypo jungles, but there are a lot of really cool morphs out there. I would try to pick a morph that would go well with your pastel female so in the future your could mix it up and pair her with the new male too if you decide to get another male.

Extremely unique boa. Especially considering it's impossible for boas to lay eggs. They have live young.

If your friend told you she laid eggs, he doesn't know what he's talking about and she isn't "proven" at all. But perhaps you misunderstood....

I do not intend to sound mean at all, but if you didn't know this, then you have a LOT of research to do on this subject before you should even consider breeding boas. That is just being responsible. And I don't mean to imply that you wouldn't do that research and take steps to gain some knowledge - but it's important that you do. Boas can be somewhat hard to sell.

Now, to answer your question. Personally, I would not buy a normal (even a "proven" adult) for $300. I can pick up a nice morph - hypo, jungle, albino - for about the same price, or in some cases a lot less, and just raise it up. If you have a pastel male (which is NOT a genetic morph - pastel is a term used to indicate clarity and brightness of color but it is not considered a "morph"), I would consider pairing him with a hypo jungle. And I also agree with Kinra on her suggestions.

And if you find a nice young female, you can do your research on breeding while she grows up.

Although i must admit my first reaction was the same: a boa that lays eggs? Ohreallynow, you dont say!

Normal boas aren't worth the time or money IMO. In ball pythons there are a vast amount of co-dom morphs that when bred to normals still produce morphs. RTB's are not like that. There are VERY few co-dom morphs in boas. Although there are plenty of recessive morphs available, it doesn't do much good to a normal female unless you're in for the long haul with hets.

Personally, I wouldn't pick her up unless it was just as a pet. But, if you're planning on picking up a male Moonglow and starting things from there, that would make sense.

45 young lol my bad guys, i did know that. LOL i was having a chat about incubation with my buddy at the time and apparently confused myself lol i'm tired. But you right evenstar, I do need to do more research. I don't know a whole lot about boas besides basic care and husbandry, i'm more python savy LOL. thanks for the advice :)

what i really want to get is the lipstick sunglows he has. they're last years babies but he's selling them for 1200 a pair.

Why don't you pick up a baby or two and raise them up....do your research on them and then learn first hand by owning them. By the time they're ready to breed, you should know whether or not you really want to breed them.
