Rat with 2 different eye colors!

I went to Petsmart and saw this female dumbo rat with 2 different eye colors! One eye is dark ruby red and the other eye is light red. So unique! I had to get her! Meet my new breeder rat Lola! :D

I believe they are referred to as 'off eyed'.

I hate rats but maybe its just white ones because that one is rather cute!

Nice. I've got one named Suiseiseki (My BF named her:rolleyes:) that looks almost just like her and has the same eyes. I've been wanting to find another bi-eyed male to put to her. If I'm gonna make snake food I can still have fun breeding pretty snake food.

I'll try to post pics, although I really to get a better camera, cell phone ones suck.

I would consider removing the odd eyed boy from your breeding program (and related offspring). The gene that causes this.. also causes mega colon. Basically the lighter eye is lighter because the gene stopped pigment working in that area. The same for any white areas on the body. In about 90% of cases the gene affects the insides of the rat as well, mega colon is basically where their intestines don't work and they can't process food or poop right. You will notice these babies, they are sickly looking they don't thrive like the other babies.. they look bloated and their death is very painful for them.

I used my male for breeding all the litters are all healthy but sometimes i get a baby that has megacolon and they get put down right away.

I personallly would still breed her then bc it only effects them "sometimes" and its a female so it will be only one clutch at a time compared to a male with the defect breeding multiple females. Couldnt you just feed off the sickly babies when they pop up once in awhile right away? or would megacolon be bad for your snake?

EDIT: After looking at some of the pics in that link i think breeding the off eyed rat would definetly be ok. In the "4 week old" rat picture it shows that huge bulge in its side. If i saw that i would feed it off right away, as soon as i noticed it. Idk why someone would let it live in pain like that for 4 weeks...

if you see it on time i guess you can feed it off but if i find one that has a big bulge i would not because thats all poop that cant pass dont.

The AMFRA has information about odd eyes and megacolon as well. Apparently, it's not the odd eye trait itself that causes it, but rather the tendency of high white rats and mice to develop this problem.
