    Reptile Emergency preparedness
I'm a new snake owner and thoroughly understand how important a stable temperature is for a snake, out of the blue I just started wondering what happens during emergency situations where there is no electricity and warmth is hard to find? Hurricanes, floods, wild weather? This past october we had a bad snowstorm and lost power for about a week and it was FREEZING, I hope I never have to make my baby go through that, I mean I even cuddled with my kitties.

I'd like to know what the veteran snake keepers have done if they've gone through this,or what are some things you would consider doing?

SORRY IF THIS THREAD HAS ALREADY BEEN MADE! I thought it would be a good discussion for the "just in case something bad happens"

I mentioned something like this when Irene was about to hit. Basically, have an evac plan set up for major storms so that it accommodates your reptiles. If you can't leave the house in time or a storm is worse than expected, it doesn't hurt to have a spare generator.

I have a 5500 watt generator for emergency use...it's enough to keep my snake room warm enough that I'm comfortable with the temps over a short period of time.

I lost power for 4 days with that storm...was able to run my refrigerator, a few lamps, one TV, my snakes racks and a space heater the whole time, with power to spare. My snake room never went below 70.

I have two things #1 a buddy heater http://www.northerntool.com/shop/too...buddy%20heater hooked to a 20lbs propane tank which allows me to keep the room temp at 80 degrees.

I also have a generator which is mainly used for our living areas and to supply power for the incubator should there be eggs in it when the power goes out.

Lots of 40 hour heat packs, lots of pillow cases, and enough tubs to either hunker down or bug out with.
