monitoring UTH temp

Can somebody recommend the best way to monitor temp for a UTH? and also post a pic to see what it looks like. Ive heard of placing a thermometer probe underneath the enclosure and also placing a thermometer on the "hot" side

I don't have any pictures. But if you go to Walmart, in the paint, homegoods section there will be outdoor thermometers. It is there. It is made by Accu-rite. It days indoor outdoor digital thermometer with probe. It also measures humidity!! It is around 12.00 I place mine inside tank underneath the substrate.

Do you have it hooked up to a thermostat? At first, I didn't, and when I checked the temperature it was 110 degrees under the substrate. Hope this helps.

i dont. i just switched to a tub set up and notice the base is much warmer- no issues with my snake, it spends lots of time in the hide. Thats why im getting one, want to make sure its controlled. what is the desired temp for the UTH?

It depends on the snake and what's preferred. You definately want to get the temps digitally checked and hook up to a thermostat. Zilla makes a proportional thermostat for like 30.00. When you set up the thermostat you set to the desired temp (say ball pythons I keep mine at 89 degrees) a proportional thermostat is different than a regular thermostat bc it adjusts the heat. It doesn't switch the pad on and off. It is constantly on.

Zilla does not make proportional thermostats, they only make on/off style thermostats... and cheap poor made ones at that.

To the OP, a thermostat is mandatory for a UTH, UTH's can and will get up to 130 degrees. this is hot enough to kill your snake.

Here are 2 good thermostats.

1. the Hydrofarm. these are on/off style thermostats, and only cost $30. They have a good track record unlike many cheap thermostats. Even still they should be replaced with a better thermostat when possible.

2. The Herpstat is a Proportional thermostat. they regulate temperatures much more accurately, and have multiple safety features to keep your snake safe and helps prevent fires caused by UTH's. They cost more but are a necessary investment

My bad, I didn't look it up that's just the first one that popped into my head. I'm actually installing one from spider robotics but they are more expensive for just one.

One thing I've learned is unless you specifically ask someone who has experience, it doesn't say to hook them up to a thermostat. Esp on YouTube most just say hook it up and your done. I know I learned from experience.
