Too tame?

My male asf is very tame, he never bites or even nibbles, and when I take him out he just walks around on me. He has been like this since I got him from a breeder. My two females seem more typical, bitey and jumpy. Is it normal for him to be this tame?

I have not been bitten by any of my asfs yet. I think as they are captive bred more and more they become more docile. As long as he acts fine and healthy I don't see being over tame as an issue

He's definately healthy (babies on the way!) I guess he is just a weirdo, which isn't a bad thing :P

Maybe you will get lucky and the babies will be friendly, of you keep any.

I'm raising them to fuzzy size and at least one will grow to hopper size, so if I get any really tame ones I'll keep them. There are not many tame asf in the US

Females with babies are the worst. I have an Albino that will fly across the cage to bite you, and she was tame before she started breeding. I won't feed her off because she's been having litters of 10-12. Her mother was the same way, and must have bitten me at least a dozen times. Loved watching my het white diamond have her for lunch..

I would save some of his daughters and raise them up to see if any of them keep his calmness, then get rid of the nippy mothers and breed him back to the daughters. Ultimately you'll end up with all calm, friendly ones.

I used this method when I raised mice and rats. As soon as one of them bit, they were designated as feeders. Eventually, everybody was nice and I could handle all of them with no problems. I even had young feeder rats that I didn't handle but once a week to move them to clean cages, and they were friendly and curious, and would have no problem being pets.

My pregnant female is pretty aggressive; she tries to bite whenever I put my hand in the cage. I will definately replace her with tamer babies. Lily will have a nice snack too :rolleyes:

Many of the ASFs I produce have reached the level of 'pet' quality. :)
It's good to see that other people (whether it's their goal or not) are producing docile ASFs.

They'll be great pets in the near future!
