Plastic Water Bowl Conundrum? Solved!

So I've been having issues with my kids dumping their plastic water dishes. Well I'm pretty sure I solved the problem!

I had a fish tank, and in my stroke of genius I decided to use the gravel from the tank (well washed mind you) to weigh down the water dishes!

So far its working well, no one has managed to dump them (yet). The water is deep enough over the rocks that I don't think it will be an issue with the snakes eating them.

I'm really hoping that this continues to work!

Or get ceramic bowls for 3-5$ and sometimes $1 at dollar store and problem solved

I use plastic dog dishes from Wal Mart, and no one tips them.

I've checked our dollar stores multiple times, but no one ever has any :(

I already had my gravel, and was just going to throw it away.

DOllar Tree is where i get the 6" ceramic bowls for $1. Havent had any in since last summer when i cleaned them out.

i use plastic dog bowls from walmart like $1.78 or something no problems though

Plastic tip-proof cat bowl + optional metal bowl inside. (The metal bowl is just so I can stick it in the dishwasher to sanitize. I have two of them and just swap them out whenever a water change happens.) I think the cat bowl as actually 3ish dollars and the metal 'inserts' were $.97 but the only ceramic bowls I could find were HUGE and would have taken up half of my admittedly large tub and the cheaper plastic bowls were really thin plastic. Besides, it's a snazzy zebra-stripe bowl. I like it.

You need to make sure you sanitize the gravel when you change the water too.

Sometimes when colored gravel is sanitized with really hot water, the 'paint' will start coming off too. So watch the gravel to make sure it's not peeling.

While this is not necessarily a bad idea, if you take the extra steps to keep it clean, you do have to be careful of the type of gravel.

But, my solution works really well also. I Velcro the dishes to the bottom of the tub. Get yourself some of that 3" wide industrial velcro and put a small square on the bottom of the dish and then the tub. Put the hooks on the dish, and the loops on the tub. Dish stays firmly in place, is easy to remove and clean.
