The Poop Factor?

This may be a silly question, but bare with me... I changed my BP's substrate to newspaper about 2 weeks ago. My dilemma is that I am not sure as to whether or not he had passed waste before I changed out his old substrate. All of my other snakes have indeed pooped within the last two weeks.. How long should I wait before I should start worring about the no poop factor?

Some poop like clockwork within x amount of days after feeding and some won't poop for a solid month or so, so it all depends on the snake and the size and frequency of feeding. I wouldn't worry about him: he'll drop a surprise for you when he's ready, and it might be sooner than you think.

I wouldn't even notice until more than a month passed. They all go when they're ready. Unless you see some big time sausage butt, I wouldn't sweat it.

Haha I have heard of this " sausage butt" but never really got it till I brought my boy home man o man hr had some biggg time sausage butt going on. But let me have it all that first night I couldn't believe it ! LOL

How long would sausage butt have to be happening before you should be concerned? I didn't handle my male all last week because he was so sausagey... When I put him flat he even moved funny like his stomach was upset. Eventually he passed some urates (larger than a marble) and a whooooooooole bunch of liquid. Just curious how much longer it would have been before I should have given him a warm soak.

Is it mainly a concern post shed if you can't confirm the vent was clear?

If I saw a bad case of sausage butt for more than a week, I'd probably start getting concerned.

There was a story on this Forum a couple years back about a person with a BP who had the worst case of sausage butt ever. The keeper got the snake out of the tub with the intention of soaking it. On the way to the soaking tub, the keeper started palpating the area just in front of the vent. The keeper said they heard a audible cracking sound, and then out came two halves of a huge urate and then about a half gallon of brown fluid. After that the snake looked perfectly normal. The best we could figure is that the urate was blocking evacuation, and when it cracked due to the palpation, the evacuation route was cleared, with the expected outcome.

The snake recovered fully, which is more than could be said of the keeper's hall carpet...

Thanks for all of your responses. I feel much better now. He still looks and acts normal so I wasn't too concerned Yet. I keep a log of all their activity, so when everyone else had poops and he still didn't I got a little concerned.

I will continue to keep an eye on him, but it sounds like I have a While before I need to be concerned.

If it does come to the "sausage butt" point.. any tips on how to help him pass on the poop? :oops:

Some folks suggest a luke warm (80 degrees) bath, other people put a towel on the floor and let them run thru their fingers for exercise. Both have been known to work.

or

Just do a complete tub or enclosure cleaning...they'll be finger painting with poop in no time ;)
