What could I use this for?

I found an old Zoo Med uth in our garage from when we had our corn snakes and I was wondering if it would have any use for my new bp. It's pretty small, 6" x 8", and it still works. I'm of course going to get the appropriate size uth for my tank, but could this be of any use?

How big is the enclosure? You should be able to use that UTH, so long as it covers at least 1/3 and no more than 1/2 of the bottom of the enclosure. Remember that you need to regulated it so it cannot potentially burn your snake.

The tank is 38" x 15" x 20" (it's a homemade cage, that's why the dimensions are a little weird). It doesn't cover nearly 1/3 of it, I can post a picture of it if you want. I will definitely be getting a thermostat. Oh, I don't have the bp yet, soon! I should have said "soon to be new". :)

I would get flexwatt or a bigger uth but if you had to you could use the 6"x8" one...

Like I said in the first post, I'll definitely get one of the right size for the tank, but I was just wondering if this one would be of any use to me and my soon to be new bp. If not, back to the garage it goes!

Honestly, I wouldn't trust a ZooMed UTH that's been out in the garage for a while. Especially if it was previously used. I barely trust them when they're new out of the package.

If it's one of the stick on types and has been removed from the bottom of a tank, I would never re-use it.

It's never been stuck to the bottom of a tank, it was taped, not sure if that makes a difference. But why wouldn't you trust it (and why dont you trust them new)? I would use a thermostat for it. I left it on under the tank for a while with a thermometer and without a thermostat (don't have one yet) and it got up to 120 degrees.

I don't trust them based on my past experience with them. Even regulated with a T-Stat, I found them to be inconsistant across the surface of the UTH (as measured with a temp gun). Back when I used glass tanks, I went though several of them because of heating element failure. I couldn't get one to last more than six months.

I hope your experence with them is better than mine.

Agreed that ZooMed heat sources tend to be hot, uneven, and stubborn. Plus, you can get larger and cooler UTHs for like half the price - Ultratherm!
