My Dart Frog Viv

Set up this vivarium over the weekend:

and I have this Dendrobates galactonotus in a temporary setup until I get the temps and humidity just right.

awesome! Is it difficult to maintain dart frog vivs? I've never really looked into it, but it seems interesting.

This was my first viv, and I learned from some mistakes. From what I've gathered so far it shouldn't be too bad maintaining it. I only let the silicone sit for 24 hours before adding the substrate and plants, but apparently I should have waited up to a week. There is a slight vinegar smell to the tank right now, but the plants seem to be doing fine. I'm going to leave it alone until the weekend (minus daily misting and 12 hours of full spectrum light), and if the plants are still thriving and the smell is completely gone I'll siphon out any water that has collected in the false bottom and add the frog.

Unless it was for a personal reason, you don't need that much leca for the false bottom. Only an inch or two will work as long as you don't have a water feature. You should not need to siphon out the false bottom very often.

Also, you may want to get some chemical free leaf litter to go on the bottom. The frogs really enjoy hunting in the leaves and it keeps the dirt from sticking to them.

Lighting should be in the 6500 kelvin range. That is best for plant growth. Some of the packages say "Plant Light" but aren't the best for growing.

I actually have a 2 inch pvc egg crate under the leca.

I left just enough room in front of it and on the sides for one layer of leca because it looks better.

Here's my 10 gallon breeding tank for mine, plants have changed quite a bit.

Ill be posting better pics when my frogs get here Wednesday. This was my first viv too and went with a eggcrate shelf, then had hydroton, then ABG mix substrate but took the hydroton out because there wasn't enough space for plants and frogs to hop around.
