Does anyone keep any arachnids?
If so what kind?

Randy does, and like 5 other members, I've gained this from some profiles. Hence the new forum.

I was given an Usumbara Sunburst Baboon (Pterinochilus Murinus) by user FourFeathers a while back. My first T! What a sp. to start with! Moves like the wind! I count myself lucky when I see him/her. Normally it hides.

Uh....yea, I got a few.

Well, actually about 50 tarantulas from around the world, scorpions, and some native to the states "true" spiders.

Thinking about keeping some yourself?

Only 50? Found homes for all the P. Murinus slings, I guess?

OK, I guess I may be showing some ignorance here, Marcus, but do tarantulas not count as "true" spiders? Granted, I don't do a lot of studying about spiders, being a bit arachnaphobic, and I realize that certain arachnids such as scorpions, the "wind spiders" and "false scorpions", ticks, etc. don't fall into the "spider" category, but are tarantulas and similar arachnids technically not "spiders"? (I'm not arguing... just curious)

I do find the itty-bitty jumping spiders pretty cool. They seem a lot more "interactive" than most arachnids I've seen. OK, most arachnids I try not to interact with, but...

Well, tarantulas are in fact, spiders. Big spiders. The term "true spiders" is merely a term that is used to describe spiders that are not tarantulas. Tarantulas are described (generally) as large, heavy bodied, hairy spiders. "True spiders" would include everything but tarantulas (if I'm not mistaken). Spiders such as Black Widows, Wolf Spiders, Black hole spiders (Kukulkania hibernalis), etc.....

I'd have to do some research to get you some more information if you're interested further, because it's really merely a description and once you get into scientific descriptions, it can get pretty technical. And, science it subject to changing their descriptions about things on a fairly regular basis (at least with arachnids).

OK, I was just curious. I had just never really thought about much distinction between the tarantulas and other spiders, other than the general species types classifications.

I have all kinds of arachnid's in each corner of my house. :lol: But i wont call them pet's.....I wont kill them because we are having such a problem with these ladybug like beetles....And my little arachnid friends are having a hay day with all the abundent food. Though I do not cringe at the site of Spider's or Scorpion's, the thought of owning one has never crossed my mind. How long do they normally live?
