What snakes are illegal now?

I just found out yesterday that Burms are now illegal in Colorado! I was just baffled because if one of those guys shakes loose, he wouldn't survive the temp drops at night.. The guy couldn't tell me what other snakes are illegal. Does anyone else know??

You should run a search for the department of game and wildlife, or the Colorado equivalent. They should have a section on the Administrative Code or similar statutes that you can look up. Here in Virginia, the list can be found here: http://leg1.state.va.us/cgi-bin/legp...g+4VAC15-30-40

I'm sure Colorado has a similar document. BTW, they may not be illegal to own in the state, but it would be against the Lacy Act to cross state lines with one. Believe it or not, that would be a federal felony. :tears:

It varies by state, but a national ban is soon going to be in place that bans the sale and interstate transportation of the Burmese python (Python molurus bivittatus), the yellow anaconda (Eunectes notaeus), and two subspecies of the African python (Python sebae)

Herp laws can get very complicated, you need to check at every level.
-Federal
-State
-County
-city/town

Then check on native/invasive speciec laws.

These laws could fall under different branches as well.
- fish and game
- animal control
- Health dept (?)


My advice is to contact your local herp society (if there is one), they would probably be your best resource.

just found out

There are length laws for anything over 6ft in Colorado springs. Also to gain a permit for said animal you must have an inspection done annually ($25.00 annual fee) before obtaining permit. The number you would call to arrange this is the county Humane Society (719) 473-1741.

I am not sure if it is all of Colorado or just Colorado springs

I just want to make a note that it bans interstate sale and transportation. They are legal to own, buy, and sell within state lines but the sale or the snake cannot cross state lines.

Not just your State...your City or County can ban an animal by as well.
