Cypress mulch substrate

Does anyone here use cypress mulch as substrate, if so where can you buy it from in bulk. Im currently using aspen shavings and I like it and everything but I think mulch looks better.

Yes, many people use cypress, I personally do not though. Look for grade A mulch that is just Cypress at your local home improvement stores/ gardening centers.

Are you aware of any dies, pesticides, insects that I would need to worry about by purchasing at a home improvment store?

You ant to get Cypress that does not have ANY dies/pesticides. Insects usually isn't a problem, but I would just keep an eye out for them

Hopefully snake lab will chime in on this one. I'm pretty sure he buys his substrate in bulk like you're talking about.

It really is dependent on the area. Where I am 100% cyprus is only available at pet stores the stuff from a garden centre has cyprus, cedar, Douglas fir, and pine bark and chips. It is often stained red or black too, and is not sold for use with food crops. I would not suggest using what I can get at all. Be careful when you do find it get a sample and check through what is there and see if you can identify what is in it.

Thanx for all the feedback, I like the cypress from petstores but from the amount Ill be buying it just isnt price convienant. If I only had one snake I wouldnt hesistate. Ive seen all kinds of cypress at home depot or lows but just wasnt sure If it was snake friendly.

Just check it over and make sure it is what you are expecting. I use organic coco coir it is way cheaper than I could get any wood chip substrate for and I really like it. By me it retails at 7$ for 110L but I get it for less from an organic greenhouse. They mark it up as well.

ive been using it for 3 or so years now. no problems, holds humidity well, only thing i'm not happy with is this year it's not shredded as well as previous years, i might need to find another brand or something.
