No, those don't hold temperatures very well and tend to break. If you are after a low cost thermostat I recommend you get a hydrofarm ($30)

I've never used one personally, but I've heard they are decent for the price. There are definitely better thermos out there but if you are on a budget I think that one will do just fine. :D

It costs he exact same amount as the Hydrofarm thermostat... So it doesn't make much sense to get a 500r with a bad track record when you can get a Hydrofarm that has a good track record, and is used by many people.

I have 4 of the 500r and only 1 of them actually works still. Haven't had much problem with them holding temps but i have had problems with the relay sticking (it stays on when the unit is trying to turn off). I got a hydrofarm unit a couple months ago and no complaints yet.

Wow, didn't know there was a problem with the ReptiTemp. I have 2 of them and they've worked flawlessly. No, they certainly don't hold temps as steady as a Herpstat obviously, and I wouldn't incubate using it, but I've used it for my leopard geckos no problem, and used to have one set up when I had a 30gallon display aquarium for one of my balls.

One of my friends uses a 500r, and he has never complained about it. He did say that it took a little work when he first got it to get it dialed in right, but afterwards it has worked for a couple of years now, needing only minor tweaks in the winter and summer...

I have two of the Hydrofarms and they work great. Had them almost a year now.
