    Happy Belated Birthday to Me
My birthday was yesterday, but I really didn't do much at all. I just started working at Denso as a temp through Staffing Solutions Tuesday night. I work third shift and so I got off at 7:00 a.m. and drove home and went to sleep. Then I got up around 4:00, finished writing my intro speech for Public Speaking and went to class. Then I read a book for about 30 minutes and went back to work at 10:30. Some birthday huh? Didn't even get a single birthday card from any of my relatives, here or up north. My niece has the same birthday and she got a card from my grandparents, but they didn't send me one. Oh well, guess i'm getting to old to care about birthdays? Anyways i'm 20 years old and my birthday present to myself is a full time job and a way out of my parents house

Thank you! I will probably be working seven days a week but at 8.75/hr and 56 hours a week that's $1800 a month after tax :D Will have to either get my snakes to eat during the day or hurry up go home and feed them after school then go to work.

    Happy birthday!

Third shift bites (I speak from experience), but you'll get used to it eventually. Try to get them to give you a consistent block of days every week, and it'll be easier. (I do Sunday-Wednesday, 10PM-830AM.) If you can do something of that nature, you'll at least be able to have some days every week where you can be awake during the day. This is advantageous for several reasons:

    1. UV exposure. Seriously. Not kidding. It starts to be pretty weird to never see sunlight. (This is of course worst during the winter months.)

    2. See your friends without having to be an insomnia zombie.

    3. Shopping & other "daytime" activities are easier that way.

    4. If you can get them to commit to a set schedule for you, you avoid the possibility of them scheduling you for Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, or something similarly awful. Alternating days of work and being off is annoying even without it being 3rd shift, but in the case of 3rd shift, it massively amplifies the insomnia zombie problem.

(If you don't understand what I mean by "insomnia zombie," don't worry, you soon will. :))

Oh, wow, I didn't even really notice the 7 days a week thing. Don't do that, it'll kill you. 5 10-hour shifts a week would be MASSIVELY better for you than 7 8-hour shifts.

Happy Belated Birthday. When you get to be my age you don't celebrate them anymore, but you sure are glad to see them :P

Thank you for sharing your experience and advice! My boss said that it is usually just five days a week and probably will be but I may be required to work seven if we get behind but most likely overtime will involve coming in an hour or two early, something like that would be better.

You're welcome, and I hope it goes well for you. Sounds like it should be mostly ok the way you're describing it now. Doing the occasional extra shift is no big deal - it's if they wanted you to do 6 or 7 days a week on a consistent basis that it would really suck.

Happy Birthday! And if yours was on the 8th then your birthday day is the same as mine, I turned 21 and was in Vegas with some family and my boyfriend :)
