Brand New!

I stumbled across this website by accident. Sure glad I did! So much good information to be found.
My long story short.... I was terrified of snakes until a month ago. My boyfriend has many bp and I swore I would never touch one.... A few weeks ago I fell in love with them! How this happened, I do not know. Now, I have a baby pastel on order and will get her on March 1. I cannot wait!!
I am so ready to get little Eve home!
Any words of wisdom for a first time bp owner?

Yes, I have that part down. I've been reading a lot on keeping the warm and cool side temps consistant along with correct humidity levels.

I am concerned when I read up on mites. How will I be able to know if/when they appear? Are there any signs I should look for?

Welcome! You will enjoy this site, it is not as harsh as the other reptile websites out there. You can feel comfortable here asking any question that you wish without being put down (most of the time, lol).

The only words of wisdom that I have is to just read the care sheets and make sure you meet all of the requirements.

Most importantly, post pics once you get your new pet! :)

Thanks! I will be sure to do that.

^ Look for little black crawlers on the snake and I would put the new one on paper towels so if it does have mites you'll be able to see them on the paper towels. Snakes will usually soak a lot when they have mites. I would pick up a can of PAM (Prevent a Mite) for future use just in case you ever get mites and I personally spray all my new one's tubs before I get them/they arrive as a mite preventative.

Your snake will start to sit in his/her water bowel, and you will be able to see the little buggers crawling on your snake. You should have a product called Provent-a-Mite. It is sold online and is the only mite spray that actually works. (they sell stuff at pet stores but it is worthless)

On the same train of thought, pet stores usually know nothing about reptiles and should be avoided (there are good reptile stores but the chain stores are crap)
