    can someone tell me why?
hello all, my normal bp always gets under his carpet and stays there till i take him out, then about 10 mins later after putting him back in the cage he goes right back under. can someone one tell me why he does this?

Because Ball Pythons like to have quiet, dark, secluded hiding places and the 1/2 log does not provide that so he is seeking it out elsewhere.

If you can see him then he can see you and will not feel as secure.

If you provide him with a solid all the way around hide with a small entrance he will probably prefer that. The 1/2 rock ones available commercially work well but a solid color plastic bowl with a door cut out will work just as well.

It may also be heat related as that is a fairly small enclosure and the light seems bright. How are his basking temps and is there a thermostat controlling that light?

They are silly like that and enjoy their privacy. My BPs, even if provided with a nice hide will still go under the newspaper if they can manage it. Nothing to worry about, though what Rylmad said is corrrect and you should try to provide a more "secure" hide for him to use.

thanks y'all.... i don't not have a thermostat on the light, the temp. stays around 78-80. i been having him with the same setup for about 6-7 years so it can't be harming him. i was wanted to know why he goes under all the time. ill will look for him another hiding spot tho.

and Lagray23, they need to have more girls like you, its awesome that you have all them snake and love them

hold on is 78-80 degrees your hot side temperature?

Ball pythons need a hot side with temperatures between 88-92 and cool side temperatures between 78-82.

Also unless you have a IR temp gun you really should have a thermometer/ hydrometer so you can monitor your temps.

You can get these at Wall*Mart for $12

Probe goes on the hot side and the unit goes on the cool side.

A thermostat with a UTH should solve your hot spot issue :)
