Weird feed????

Help please!
My new baby ball is having some troubles and I need some advise. I fed him last week and he ate the mouse (frozen) just fine, striking and coiling. This week he has a few things. 1. He is entering a shed. 2. He has a minor respiratory issue. I took him to the vet yesterday, they said she has minor vent inflammation causing a whistle but nothing too serious. They gave me some medicine to dab on it for the next week. So I tried to feed him today and instead of striking the mouse he kinda just placed it in his mouth and coiled it a little. He was eating it from the side and after about 10 minutes of him trying to get it turned around he finally got the head in his mouth but then just spit it out and left it :( I'm really worried about him.

Was the mouse warm enough? That's a really common action when the prey is too cold or still frozen in the middle. They hit that spot and then spit it right out. It's even more dangerous when you and the animals doesn't notice and it eats it and them goes into shock because of the cold spot in their bellys. Try again next feeding day and make sure the mouse is about 100.f and it's totally thawed or warmed through.

I've been thawing them in hot water... Isnt that weird how he ate it though? Not striking but placing it in his mouth?

X2 on making sure its warm enough and all the way thawed. Ive had snakes make really lazy attempts at food before, generally for me its been when they have a bad strike and then realize that they have the food. I wouldnt be concerned after just one time but if it keeps happening you may want to look into it. Good Luck, hope its nothing.

I've seen some do that when they are used to ft. If the heat signature was off he could have been that hungry that he tried to eat it anyways.

Here's a better way to thaw them. Take them out overnight let it thaw then hit it with a blow dryer for a few min. Thawing them in super hot water quick like that can "cook" the rat.

He is eating Normal now and just shed :) thanks for all your help, I'm pretty sure I was over heating them!
