Thermal Leak Detector & Digital Thermometer question

First off, is a thermal leak detector the same thing as a temp gun used for seeing the temp in a BP's cage? I am using my boyfriend's dad's right now, and I wasnted to make sure it was accurate.

Secondly, I have a digital thermometer in his tank right now. The main "machine" is on the cold side, and the wire and little sticky pad thing to measure "outside temperature" is attached to the glass on the hot side.
However, it's saying that the inside temp is warmer than the outside temp... What am I doing wrong?

The leak detector is if I am understanding the product correctly is a low DS IR gun and should be fine. IR guns in general are +/-2ºF accuracy about the same for almost all cheap digital thermometers.

The rest of your post confused me a bit. You have an accurite of similar thermometer that has a built in hygrometer and thermometer and a second thermometer on a probe? Did I get that right? You have placed the unit inside the enclosure on the cool side and the probe on the warm side and the cool side is reading higher than the warm (hot) side is.

Did you check both readings with the IR gun? It is quite possible that the probe is not reading correctly. The nature of resistive thermometers is they work by electrical resistance changing at different temps. The issue is anything that changes resistance changes the temp. Bend or crimped cords or any kind of damage to the probe cord or contact and on and on. Thy switching them and see if it changes.

LOL this is funny, I already have an IR temp gun but I was just looking at the same one yesterday and was wondering the same thing. I think they are the same though. Second part is confusing. Hope you get it figured out.

You have it set up right. Remind me again what heat sources you have and where they are.

To everyone else she has an Acurite digital thermometer with probe. She has the probe on the hot side. The actual thermometer itself has a second temperature sensor and a hydrometer. That is on the cold side of her tank.

Ok assuming the set up is as stated I'd switch the unit around so the probe part is on the other side. Check with the ir gun, The side with the uth should not be cooler than the side with out it.

Are you using a Tstat?

Is the UTH actually on ? Does it feel warm?

That's exactly what I have :) & its working fine now, and I finally have the temperatures all correct for day and night. So happy. Now I just hope it stays the same when I move the snake to my house tomorrow. lol

That's great, once you get things set up they should stay that way as long as the room temperature stays in the same range.
