pretty amazing...though I'm pretty sure the most paid out for a ball python was well north of $40,000...maybe in the $150,000+ range.

Wow! Very cool find. I can't believe what some people are willing to pay. One of the coolest by far was the cloned dog IMO. :D

The saying goes that there is no greater love than that of a man and his dog. But to what extent is someone willing to go to obtain such a friend? From million dollar racing horses to striped pythons, the amount of cash individuals are willing to fork (pun intended) out is truly incredible.

Green Monkey – $16,000,000

The Green Monkey was purchased as a 2-year-old race horse at Calder Race Course by Demi O’Byrne. A descendant of two Kentucky Derby winners, the winner of the auction had high hopes for the young horse, but the Green Monkey flopped never winning a race. The 16 million dollar horse now has a stud fee of only $5,000 and has been retired after his poor placings.


Missy – $1,200,000

Missy is a three year old black and white Holsten Cow. She currently holds the record for the most expensive cow ever sold on the market. Winning the title for Grand Champion of the 2009 Western Fall National Show and being one of the best show cows in North America made her a target for buyers. Missy sold for $1.2 million in Ontario, Canada on November 11th, 2009.

Holding the record for the most expensive dog ever purchased, Yangtze River Number Two (yes, that’s his name) is a black mastiff standing approximately 31 inches tall. The dog was purchased by a young millionaire known as “Mrs. Wang”. When purchased at 18 months old, the black mastiff arrived in style, approaching her house in a 30 car motorcade.

After Edgar and Nina Otto lost their beloved dog Lancelot to cancer in 2008, the Florida couple welcomed Lancelot back home just a year later. Lancelot Encore is made up of the same DNA that their beloved dog Lancelot was. The couple won a dog-cloning at Bio-Arts auction held in San Francisco with the impressive price tag of 155,000. Oddly enough, while being interviewed by Al Rocker on the Today Show, the couple spoke of how at just 10 weeks old, the puppy was assuming his “forebear’s place of preeminence” in their place of residence.


White Lion Cub – $138,000

While these cubs might look like something that would cuddle with your three year old, these cubs turn into flesh eating 300 lb monsters. The white lion is not a subspecies of the African lion, yet a genetic malfunction causing them to be all white. In South Africa, where most of the four hundred accounted for can be found, they are considered a rarity and beautiful creature to own.

The stag beetle is one of the 1200 insects in the Lucanidae family known for it’s blood curling mandibles (antlers coming out of its head). An average stag beetle is approximately 2-3 inches in length, but the one brought into a retailer was over 3 inches in length. The Japanese breeder of the beetle was paid $89,000 on the spot for the rare creature.

It’s hard to deny that baby Chimps aren’t the cutest pets, but the same can’t be said when the grow up. The average adult chimp is around 150-250 lbs and 10x stronger than the average male human. Despite the countless incidents that have occurred in recent years, many people still buy these cute babies which run approximately $50,000-$75,000.


Bengal Cat – $42,000

While most Bengal cats usually sell in the ballpark of $800-$1500, an unusual sale took place in London, England in 1998. A second generation cat sold for $42,000 to an unknown woman. The unusual high price for a feline comes from the blood line in the breed. The Cat Fanciers’ Association, the oldest and most respected organization, does not recognize the breed due to it’s “non-domesticated” bloodline coming from the Savannah cat.


Lavender Albino Ball Python – $40,000

In 2003, two snake breeders heard rumors of an albino python in Africa. After negotiations, which were heard to end at $40,000, the two obtained the python which was said to be in bad shape. But after rehabilitating the snake, they bred the snake and could sell the offspring for near $20,000.

While many thought they simply did not exist anymore, a man by the name of Howard Voren perused any lead he had on these rare creatures. He received a call from Honduras in which two pairs had been spotted. He acquired a male and a female and attempting breeding the pair. After countless attemps, he was successful. The blue mutation amazons are the most sought after parrots in the world bringing in nearly $20,000 for one


Palm Cockatoo – $16,000

The Palm Cockatoo is also named the Goliath Cockatoo and is a rare beauty. The majority of the breed is owned by celebrities such as Natalie Copp, David Roberts, and Mike Tyson. Located in New Guinea and northern Queensland, Australia, the Palm Cockatoo finds it’s way around the world for a whopping $16,000.


Leucistic Ball Python – $15,000

The homozygous form of the Fire Ball, the Leucistic Ball Python is a rare reptile that can only be bred within a certain climate. With smooth white skin, and pitch black eyes with a hint of red, some consider this snake to be a bit creepy (including myself). At the beginning of it’s existence, it sold for approximately $15,000, but you can get your hands on one now for $2,500.


Hyacinth Macaw – $14,000

Located mainly in Southern South America, the Hyacinth Macaw is an endangered species that is loved by many. The breed is the largest flying macaws of the species and considered to be the most desired pet bird with it’s friendly demeanor. One can only expect that it would cost a fortune.

I remember when a pair of HET pieds were 15K......yes...that is $15,000.......fifteen THOUSAND dollars........

Oh, I KNOW ball pythons have gone for more than 40K before. :P
I'll bet those het pieds paid back every penny invested in them, too.
