Chimeric Rat? Split face coloring.

He is from a blue x hooded breeding

He is visually a broken hooded and his face is two different colors. No odd eyes that I can tell. The other side of his face is like a tan/caramel color.

Any thoughts?

I wonder if that would be considered a tri-color, either way I'd keep him (if only as a pet)

Looks like a chimera to me. Looks like mink and beige maybe.

Cool rat, it's a shame that chimeras don't produce more chimeras. :(

Oh wow, that was just an educated guess I took on him after seeing the chimeric mice.

Pretty cool. I am still going to do some experimental breeding just in case he isn't chimeric and it's something else. I know chimerism is not genetic.

Through breeding could we determine if he is chimeric or not? I guess it would just depend on what set of DNA is linked to what system of cells.

Correct me if I am wrong, but because he is from a blue mom, making him 100% het blue, if he never produced blue offspring with a visible blue then we can safely say that he is chimeric and the DNA from the non blue parent (dad) is present in his sperm?

Right? Fingers crossed that it's that easy?

If it was mink and beige would it not have ruby or red eyes?

I believe both eyes are black. I will bring out our nearly dead flash light and nearly blind him to see if one is really dark ruby. I was spending time with all the rats last night and I do have some that are odd eyed in just the right light but I haven't noticed on him.

The chimerism may play a role in the one eye not being ruby/red you think?

I'm sorry I thought the rat was brown, but on a different monitor now it's looking like a black.
So what else was in the litter with this rat?



Usually, a chimera is 2 colours that are both genetically possible from the pairing.
For example, if you had a litter of black and blue babies, you could have a chimera which is black and blue. (wouldn't that look neat!?)

Other litter mates were black hoodeds and some black variberks.

He is about to need a home... He is constantly either picking fights with his girls or they are beating up on him. I am getting rather tired of it.
