What kind of air purifiers are people using?

I know there are some that you can make yourself. I'm wondering if it's better to make your own, which I would rather not, or if there are some you can get for a good price that work pretty well. My rat/snake room is about 12x12 and it's getting harder and harder to control the smell as I add more and more rat racks.

I use Arm and Hammer cat box spray. It's intended to keep the urine/feces odors down on cat litter, but it works FANTASTIC on carpets. I spray it straight up in the air and it doesn't take long to clear out the smell :)

I use it on my mouse tank too. Granted I only have one, but she can get herself into a right funk. Works awesome :)

Its in the cat aisle at Walmart, and I'm assuming anywhere else that carries cat litter.

I use Desktop HoneyWell that does 150sq ft. I set it on high in snake room near rodents.

Says hepa filter lasts about 6 months bit with rodents i been changign every 2 months. As filter gets dirty fast wit the pine dust and so on.

There is a new one i was checking out today that kills odor and bacteria via UV along with trapping anything 2microns or bigger. But it was 179 and didnt want to drop money till i got more reviews on it.

I use that stuff in the cat boxes and it is amazing. I would just be nervous about putting it in the rat room in case the snakes breathe in the dust. I guess I could put it in bowls or something near the rat racks like you would with baking soda.

I was looking at some hepa stuff today and was wondering about a small room sized purifier. I might have do to that. A friend of mine has an activated carbon filter that he got off ebay, but I can't find it for some reason.

I have some UV air sterilizers at the moment, and plan to pick up more actual filters in the future.

Hepa furnace filter duct taped to a 20" box fan.

The snake/rat room used to get fierce within 2-3 days of my changing the litter--guess because it's such a small room, <100 sq. feet. Now I can change litter once a week and it never gets horribly bad.

I have a window fan and set it to blow out. Cleaning the shavings once a week seems fine, unless they have a lot of babies in the bin. Those get changed more often.

I will be looking for that Arm and Hammer spray. Can always use something on those days, you know. I'm thinking of hanging some air freshner type things on the fan itself so it blows out less odorous air. But I don't have a neighbor within 3 lots of me, so it's not an issue. I'm sure if my window was next to my neighbor's house, I'd have a few complaints at times!

Seems the best results come from just CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN. I KNEW I would end up spending way too much time taking care of rats for the money i'll be saving by raising my own rather than buying feeders. Oh well.

I would like to set up an exhaust fan, but I'm not sure how well it would work here in IA in the cold months.

If it's blowing out, it won't draw cold air IN. BUT... you would only want to run it a limited time once a day. When it got down to freezing here, I ran the fan anyway for about ten minutes and it cleared the room pretty well.

It does get to be a hassle, because mine is a window fan, so I have to open the window, put it in, turn it on... run it a while, then turn it off, take it out, close the window.

Usually I just have a plastic hanging and I tuck the plastic up, turn the fan on. But there's too much air leaking in when the fan is off if I don't take the fan down and close the window completely.
